ISO 9001 Managed Services Program

CenturyLink Managed Services has received ISO 9001:2015 certification of the Quality Management System (QMS) covering a variety of requirements regarding the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) product. This includes migration (where applicable), development, provision and operation of all hardware and software components of the service provided by CenturyLink in numerous US and international locations. While the scope of the ISO 9001:2015 Certification is limited to SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) product, the Quality Management System is applied as the foundation of service across all Managed Services products.

ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization. ISO 9001:2015 is the international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system. Organizations use the standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements and to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system. This standard is based on quality management principles including a strong customer focus, top leadership involvement, engagement of people, the process approach, continual improvement, evidence-based decision making, and quality relationship management.

While the scope of the ISO 9001:2015 Certification is limited to SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud product, the Quality Management System is applied as the foundation of service across all Managed Services products and services. Our managed services has adopted many of the same requirements of the Quality Management System process across our products, including a document management policy, Quality Management System process review, corrective and preventative action, and management reporting. Our recent certification only serves to reinforce the CenturyLink Managed Services mission to “drive a services-oriented, customer centric model” that meets or exceeds customers' requirements and expectations.

The primary benefit of ISO 9001 certification means that the company can demonstrate to existing and potential customers that effective information security processes have been defined and implemented thus creating a trust relationship.

Overview of the ISO 9001 Standard

The ISO 9000 family of international quality management standards and guidelines has earned a global reputation as a basis for establishing effective and efficient quality management systems.

ISO 9001 defines what you should do to consistently provide product that meets customer expectations and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. There are seven clauses in the standard specifying activities that need to be considered when you implement your system:

  • Context of the Organization
  • Leadership
  • Planning
  • Support
  • Operation
  • Performance Evaluation
  • Improvement

Implementation Process

Implementing a Quality Management System can be broken down into the following steps or parts.

  1. Engage Top Management

Talking to management is crucial to getting them onbaord about why a Quality Management System should be implemented, defining the objectives and scoping the implementation, and determining the context, objectives, and business processes involved.

  2. Identify Key Processes

And identification of the processes needed to implement the Quality Management System is paramount to success. You will also need to understand the ISO 9001 requirements and determine the risks of the process.

  3. Plan

Identifying the gaps in the current system will help your organization understand what you need to implement for improvement. You'll also need to identify the process controls, working environment, and facilities needed.

  4. Document

Documenting the Quality Management System process is crucial to success. Everyone in the organization has to be on the same page in regards to the processes, activities, and controls needed. Make sure to prepare the documentation according to standards and follow the ISO 9001 requirement guidelines.

  5. Implement

Once documented, the Quality Management System can be implemented. It may make sense to implement in phases based on the structure of the organization. This included training employees, managing and verifying the processes, and controlling the monitoring and measuring equipment.

  6. Manage

A Quality Management System is only good for the long-haul if it is managed according to continuing standards. Do this by monitoring performance, auditing process effectiveness, managing system and operational change, focusing on customer satisfaction, and performing management review.

  7. Improve

Your organization should adopt a "continuous improvement" principle on your Quality Management System. Once your processes are in place, come back on a regular basis to evaluate what is and isn't working and how you can improve the process. You can also seek third-party certification of the Quality Management System to improve the overall customer perception of your Quality Management System.
